Philadelphia Swim Pond Master Build

Philadelphia Swim Pond
Swim Pond

As part of our recent advanced training at Pondomonium,  the pond industry’s largest trade event of the year,  AquaReale had the opportunity to help build a large Spectacular Swim Pond in Illinois.

The customers originally wanted a big pond their kids could play in, but the more they learned about Swim Ponds, the more interested they were.

They also had storm water issues which would be helped by the pond.  Downspouts were included as part of the system, which incorporated an overflow that drained into a drainage system.  This allows to the pond water to fluctuate by as many as 8 inches, allowing there to be an additional 8000-gallon storm water runoff into the pond before it overflows.

The Swim Pond is a 30 x 50 swim pond with a 20 x 20 wetland filter and a steam connecting the wetland filter to the pond, all getting drawn into a 15 x 15 intake skimmer bay.  In addition, the pond takes runoff from four properties, harvesting rainwater which leads to a bubbling rock in the front of the house.

The pond uses wetland filtration to filter a large body of water where people can swim and they can have fish as well as a clean body of water.  Instead of salt or chlorine, they use beneficial bacteria instead of harsh chemicals to keep the water clear

AquaReale recently built a Philadelphia Swim Pond, which was a conversion we did from a pool to a Swim Pond.  Contact us to see how we can help you get the Swim Pond/Recreational Pond of your dreams.

At AquaReale, all of our clients are special.  We do our best to bring their visions to reality.  In some cases, the client reaches out to us.

When Gary contacted us, he had just bought a house.  He had always had ponds at previous locations, and knew he wanted another pond.  His research on Horsham, PA pond installations led him to AquaReale.

In a word, Gary was thrilled with his Horsham, PA pond installation by AquaReale: “They were so easy to have around.  I think what I liked best about the process was the openness of AquaReale.  They involved me in everything.  Matt told me what he was thinking. I didn’t feel like people descended upon my home and did it TO me.  It had to do with atmosphere.  They kept me abreast every step of the way, and asked questions.  Matt started it and the guys continued.  And let me tell you, they are perfectionists.  I never had to say just leave it.  I mean, they did a WOW!! job.  Absolutely meticulous, the whole job.  I had no doubts or concerns, and there was open discussion about everything.  They had all the answers.“

A true success

Gary W. loves his Horsham, PA pond installation created by AquaReale.  “I love the placement, and I love that I can walk around barefoot.  It just feels like it’s been there forever.  And because it blends into the landscape, it feels like another room.  It has inspired me with so much creativity and serenity.  Another feature I love is the rock work.  It is a work of art.   I also love knowing my fish have caves for protection from the birds!  I think the best part about my Horsham pond by Aquareale is that everyone who comes to visit wants to sit on the back porch just a little while longer.  Friends and family gather to listen to the sound of the water moving over the rocks.

“One amazing thing about my new Horsham, PA pond installation by AquaReale is that it has become a silent memorial to my mom.  I put a memorial to her outside at the pond.  It was almost as if she knew, because on Thanksgiving Day, cardinals began to appear…as though she had sent them.

Thanks to Matt and AquaReale, I am outside more than I have ever been.  My Horsham, PA pond installation brings me closer to nature.  AquaReale is my water feature professional for life.  I couldn’t recommend anyone higher.”

What to do with your yard?  Get inspired with our latest Montgomery County Pondless Waterfall and flagstone patio!

We worked with Fill A Bagel in Jenkintown to create  a small water feature outside their Jenkintown, PA store, but with the new Oreland store came a lot more opportunity.

Vicky and Charlie Ard are the owners of both locations and they own the physical building location in Oreland, located at 100 East Pennsylvania Ave,  AND there was plenty of green space there!

Vicki wanted a patio for her customers to sit and relax and enjoy their breakfast and lunch sandwiches and bagels.

When we talked about doing a water feature at the store, we decided we could do the patio for the Ards as well, creating a flawless space that is soothing and relaxing.  Customers can sit on the large sitting wall or on the patio chairs as they listen to the soothing sounds of water via  bubbling rocks and streams. The Montgomery County Pondless Waterfall adds visual and auditory delight

The patio is 16 x 14, made with Pennsylvania bluestone, irregular cut.  “We tried to match the aesthetic of the building,” says Matt Reale, co-owner of AquaReale.

The results…

Hundreds of people go through the stores  each weekend and Vicky and Charlie wanted them to have a pleasant place to sit and enjoy their food

“The patio turned out great, ” said Matt.  “It’s a cool and laid back place to hang out and eat your food.  Since the patio is enclosed on three sides, it’s easier for moms and dads to keep track of their little ones.  The Montgomery County Pondless Waterfalls  have no standing bodies of water, just recirculating bubbling rocks and streams.”

The reason for a dry laid stone wall instead of mortar?  “Concrete is needed for mortar on wet walls, and this can lead to more structural problems down the road,” explains Matt.  “Dry laid stone won’t weather like a man made product will.  Dry laid stone is more structural sound, as there is nothing to break apart or crumble.”

Formal Pond Flagstone Project: Before and After

Formal Pond and Flagstone Project: Before

Formal Pond Flagstone Project:  Before

AquaReale had the opportunity to take a large overgrown area, which had two walls and falling apart flagstone and make it a beautiful inviting sitting area.

The space had been beautiful quite  a few years back and then fell into a state of disrepair.  AauaReale was tasked with bringing this idea to life, creating what was being envisioned by the client and her gardener.

Formal Pond Flagstone Project:  During

We took out the flagstone walls around the sides and opened the area up for one large inviting space.  We created and built a 10 x 6 formal pond and a pergola made out of cedar.

We also created the wood deck under the pergola, building around the hot tub to mask if from the overall view.   Beautiful PA flagstone was then laid to make a large, inviting patio.

Our clients spend hours out here each week,, relaxing to the look and sound of moving water as they are in the hot tub.

Koi Fish Pond : A New Beginning…

Al  and Joan T were moving and were very anxious about what to do with their fish and needed a Koi Fish Pond as soon as possible

They found us during a google search. and reached out to see if AquaReale could help.  Al is a firefighter and he saved his money for quite a while to get a bigger pond at his new house.  HE had a very small pond at his current house.  Al and his wife were concerned about their fish and the move.  We assured them we would build the new pond first and then get them safely to their new home.

Koi  Fish Pond Construction

AquaReale built Al and Joan an 11 x 16 natural eco-system pond  in three days.  We used Pennsylvania field stone boulders for a natural look and situated the pond in a prime spot in the back yard viewable from multiple windows in Al and Joan’s  pond.

We put in plant shelves as well as fish caves, hiding spots for the fish if predators are near.  The pond will soon be filled in with beautiful natural greenery

Koi Fish Pond Praise

Al and Joan were very pleased with the results. “We got so much more than expected.” said Al.  “This is the first pond i didn’t build myself and I am thrilled with the results.”    “We are so happy with how this turned out,” added Joan.  Our grandchildren are going to love this!”

We are happy to report that we delivered all of Al’s fish safely to their new home with no casualties.   The family is enjoying the new pond and their grandchildren have already found a new frog.

The Penn Museum Pond: How we helped make it better

Large Pond Renovation
Large Pond Renovation

Large Pond Renovation Challenge

Why a large pond renovation? When AquaReale first went to visit the pond at the University Of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, it was not in great shape. The large 25 x 60 foot pond had not been cleaned for a few years and years of people throwing food in to “feed the fish” had left the water looking green and murky. In addition, the pond was not a healthy habitat for its fish.

The Penn Museum pond is loved and appreciate by thousands of people each year, and AquaReale wanted to make sure it was operating at its full potential. It had originally been built as a reflecting pool, which is not the best environment for fish, since the water is shallow and heats up fast.

The Large Pond Renovation Process

AquaReale began by draining and cleaning the pond. The fish were placed in a portable koi tank with their own water. After the cleaning, the fish were put back in the pond and the next step began. We worked in the pump room at the museum, updating the pumps, bead filters and UV units.

We also developed a system to trap sediment and allow water to flow slower through the filter. The sediment tank helps the filtration media do their job by slowing the water down.

And finally, we added some plants, which are very important in fish ponds. The pond had massive amounts of open water, which promotes algae growth and makes the water warm quicker. Plants provide cooler shade for the fish, especially important in a large shallow pond like this one.

The Large Pond Renovation Results

The Penn Museum pond looks much clearer since the cleaning and pump renovation. The green water is gone and the filtration media is working as hoped. The fish have more shade and cooler water and the pond is back to its former glory.

We recommended and continue to offer a maintenance package for Penn to keep the pond at its maximum health and beauty.
